Yamasa Kamaboko Yumesenkan - Japanese Fish Cake

We were invited by some community members to go out and make kamaboko. Kamaboko is Japanese fish cake. The fish is mashed and made into a paste called surimi, then it is either steamed, fried or boiled. We first stopped by a restaurant to eat lunch before heading to Yamasa Kamaboko Yumesenkan. Yamasa is a famous Japanese brand that made fish cake popular. The food at the restaurant we went to was plentiful and quite filling. Blake ordered a pancake which came out golden brown and fluffy. I ordered a mix of vegetable and fish tempura.

Yamasa Kamaboko Yumensenkan is a popular touristic location. There is a green field outside with a gigantic metal fish. During the springtime, the field becomes an explosion of color as flowers bloom. We made kamaboko on a stick. When we arrived to the kitchen area we were given a hair net and plastic apron to wear. I loved the lunch lady look! The fish paste was already prepared and in a ball shape on the board when we got there.

We followed the instructor as she showed sp how to spread it into the frame to make it into a rectangle so that we could roll it onto the bamboo stick. Unfortunately, as Blake tried to roll his onto the bamboo stick the paste began sticking to the board but with some aid from the instructor he was able to get it rolled up! The fish cakes took about 15 minutes to cook and we got to take them home. We were too full from lunch to eat them there. We also took a picture with Yamasa's mascot, a girl named Satchan. We have seen her a few times throughout Himeji.
After such hard work making kamaboko, we soaked our feet in a natural hot spring tank on the complex for free. We were so glad to hang out with locals and for being able to do something new that we otherwise wouldn't have known about.
