Tsukimi Harvest Moon Viewing Festival 2023

 
 
Tsukimi means moon viewing and every year for the harvest moon family and friends gather to watch the moon. This year we went to Himeji Castle, which had a stage set up for performances and booths selling food and local sake. I opted for a bento and Blake got his favorite oden. Oden is a type of winter soup that has hard boiled egg, konjac, daikon, and fishcakes. The oden even had konjac in the shape of Himeji Castle. It's a wonderful tradition to take in the change in season with loved ones.

This year the Moon-Viewing Festival was on Friday, September 13th. This event follows the lunar calendar so it falls on a different date every year. The event started at 5pm and went on until 9pm. The Moon-Viewing Festival was for the Harvest moon. The Harvest moon is the first full moon closest to the Autumnal equinox. Many people found a spot to set up and had some food and drinks while they waited for the moon. Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Toyama and Takaoka Trip

Takayama Sarubobo Bench Day 1 Takayama We bought our train tickets at Himeji Station. ICOCA is not accepted at Takayama Station, so it's best to have tickets since we'd have to transfer trains as well. In total, it was about 4 hours to get there. Once we arrived, we looked for lunch, but with the timing most places were closed. We eventually found a Nepalese restaurant. After checking in to our hotel, we left our luggage and walked around briefly in Takayama Old Town, a series of streets with well-preserved buildings. We also relaxed with a delicious ice cream break. We'd return to the area another day so we weren't in a rush to see it all. For dinner, we tried Takayama ramen at a place near our hotel. We wrapped the day up by going to the onsen (hot spring) in our hotel. Nunobiki Falls and the Kobe Luminarie

Nunobiki Falls ( 布引の滝 , Nunobiki no Taki ) are four waterfalls: Mentaki, Ontaki, Tsutsumigadaki and Meotodaki near Kobe's Nunobiki Herb Garden. In the past, we've caught glimpses of one of the falls from the cable car taking us to the Herb Garden. We finally got to walk the path instead to see the falls and the water reservoir up close. The falls also have special significance since they have been inspiration in some Japanese literature and art. One example is The Tales of Ise from the Heian period (794 to 1185AD). Before reaching the water reservoir, there was an area that had a great view of the city and lots of benches to sit down to enjoy the view.  We had lunch at Jesus Pizza. Can't visit Kobe without stopping by here! From there we got ready to walk to Meriken Park and see the annual Kobe Luminarie. Fukusaki Yokai Monster Town Day Trip

I first heard of Fukusaki Yokai (monster) Town from an IG post and was surprised that it wasn't too far from Himeji. The took the Bantan Line train from Himeji to get there, which coincidentally used to be the line I would previously take to get to one of of my schools the first time I was teaching in Japan.  Once we arrived, we went to Oshoji Temple. It was quite busy that day as their sala flowers were blooming; we were told that they bloom in the morning and wither in the evening. This flower appears in Buddha's death story and it represents the impermanence of things, that all beauty is fleeting. The term "Shogyo Mujo'' is used to mean that nothing in the world remains unchanged forever. We also had a Japanese sweet ( wagashi ), and matcha in the garden.    From the temple we went with friends to an Italian pizza restaurant and carb loaded, haha. Okayama & Kurashiki

Day 1: Okayama We started our weekend trip going to Okayama. Okayama Castle (岡山城) is also known as "Crow Castle" because it has a black exterior quite opposite that of the "Egret Castle," Himeji Castle. Okayama Castle was destroyed in World War II and has since been reconstructed. Inside the castle there is a pottery class, a souvenir shop, and a small restaurant where we ate lunch. Right next to the garden is the Okayama Korakuen Japanese Garden. It is considered one of the three great gardens of Japan. The garden was built about 300 years ago. It was one of the biggest gardens we have visited, and we enjoyed taking a nice stroll around it. It would be even more beautiful to visit during the springtime.    Day 2: Kurashiki The next day we caught a train to Kurashiki. Usually, we use Google Maps to figure out what train we need to take.
